Cap: red or orange tone, here and there with white mole-like spots.
Gills: white to cream situated under the cap. Firmly stuffed and not joined to the stem.
Stipe (tail): white with a weak surface. The base has a bulbous volva (cup-like base from which the stem arises) with shaggy rings of scales around it and an enormous skirt.
Spores: white and oval.
Not to be mistaken for: the blusher (Amanita rubescens), which is of comparative shape, with a pale, rosy earthy colored cap and cream spots.
